Overview (Mac Devices)
This article applies to Mac users only.
Keeping Google Chrome up to date is essential for maintaining a secure, fast, and reliable browsing experience. Updates include important security patches, performance improvements, and new features that help protect both users and organizational data.
Why Updates Matter
-
Security: Chrome updates often fix vulnerabilities that could be exploited by malicious websites or software.
-
Performance: New versions improve speed, stability, and compatibility with modern web applications.
-
Reliability: Updates reduce crashes and ensure websites function correctly.
How Chrome Updates Are Managed
Our device management system automatically keeps Google Chrome up to date. When a new version is released:
-
Chrome will be scheduled to update automatically.
-
Users will receive a 3-hour warning notification before Chrome restarts to apply the update.
-
This ensures minimal disruption while still maintaining system security.
What to Expect During an Update
-
After the 3-hour notification period, Chrome will automatically close and restart.
-
Any unsaved work in browser tabs may be lost, so users should save their work when they receive the warning.
How to Manually Trigger an Update (Mac Only)
If you do not want to wait for the scheduled restart, you can trigger the update yourself:
-
Save your work in any open Chrome tabs.
-
Fully quit Google Chrome:
-
Right-click the Google Chrome icon in the Dock
-
Select Quit
-
-
Wait about 3 seconds.
-
You should then see a notification that Chrome has been updated.
-
Open Chrome again and continue working.
Note: Closing the Chrome window does not fully quit the application. You must use Quit from the Dock.
Best Practices
-
Always save your work when you see the update warning.
-
Restart Chrome promptly when notified to avoid forced restarts.
-
Regularly close unused tabs to reduce the risk of losing work during updates.
